High Heels Hurt You

Love your sky-high stilettos and kiss-me pumps? Some view high heels as sexy and feminine, making the legs look longer and the breasts and buttocks more prominent. Smoking used to be sophisticated, too. And for a thousand years in China, women were crippled by foot binding.

High heels push your weight forward to the balls of your feet, tightening the muscles of your calves and shortening the Achilles tendon - sometimes permanently. Some chronic wearers are unable to walk flat in bare feet. High-heeled shoes also stress your ankles and knees and tilt the pelvis forward, tightening your low back and throwing off the whole natural curvature of your spine. This misalignment of the spine not only causes back pain, but can contribute to neck pain and headaches, too.

if you’re still tempted to wear high heels, be aware that you'll not only suffer pain in the short term, but you'll also increase your chances of long-term health problems. the most common injuries are sprained ankles. Other damage includes Ingrown toenails, corns, bunions, hammer toes, and nerve damage. high heels also contribute to joint degeneration and arthritis, especially in the knees.

And what if you need to run for your own safety? Don't hobble yourself with fashion!
