"I remember the black wharves and the ships,
And the sea-tides tossing free;
And Spanish sailors with bearded lips,
And the beauty and mystery of the ships,
And the magic of the sea..."

Need Sleep? Get a Massage

Daylight Savings Time may give us longer days and more sunlight, but it also makes for shorter nights until our bodies adjust. And the toll of sleep deprivation—no matter what the cause—can be significant, including illness and the inability to cope well with stress. Fortunately, massage therapy can help get your body back into healthy sleeping patterns.

Women who experience hot flashes in their 50's and 60's have an 11% lower risk of heart disease later in life.

About half of the men in the US, Mexico, and Brazil are infected with some form of HPV, a virus that can cause cervical cancer.

Non-African people have 1 to 4% Neanderthal DNA. This tells geneticists that modern humans interbred with Neanderthals after we migrated out of Africa, probably around 60,000 years ago in the Middle East.

You snooze, you lose. Lack of sleep stimulates hunger and appetite, especially for fats and carbs. Getting closer to 9 hours of sleep per night can help you manage your weight.

Women's Heart Attack Symptoms
Subtle, Dangerous, Different From Men's

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in America in both women and men. Every year, a quarter of a million women die of various types of heart disease, including heart attacks.

Since 1980, the death rate among men from heart disease has steadily decreased, presumably due to promotion of heart healthy lifestyle changes. The rate among women has remained about the same. One out of three American women will die of heart disease.

As with much medical research, most of the early studies on heart attack symptoms focused on men and underrepresented women. Estrogen in women provides some protection from heart disease. However, when women's bodies stop producing estrogen at menopause, women’s heart disease risk can rise significantly, depending on family history and lifestyle.

Recent research by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) shows that women's symptoms are more variable and not as predictable as those of men. Researchers interviewed over 500 women who had recently suffered a heart attack. 95% of the women in the NIH study reported having warning signs at least a month before their heart attack.

Prevent or ease a heart attack at the earliest possible opportunity. Know the early warning signs, and pay attention to your body. Your life might depend on it.

Prior to heart attack, major early symptoms include:
- Unusual fatigue
- Sudden sleep disturbance
- Shortness of breath
- Indigestion or nausea
- Anxiety or impending sense of doom

During the heart attack, most common symptoms include:
- Shortness of breath
- Weakness
- Unusual fatigue
- Cold sweat
- Dizziness or light-headedness

Most of the women had no chest pain, a common symptom in men. Unfortunately, many clinicians still think that chest pain is the most important indicator of heart attack in both genders.

Lower your risk of heart disease by maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Eat a healthy diet, get regular exercise, avoid smoking and gaining excessive weight.
