Five Facts About Massage
That You May Not Know
You know massage feels good, but did you know that it has many other therapeutic advantages, too?
Simple touch is an ancient form of providing comfort and relief. Research confirms that massage helps muscle pain, and it also provides other benefits, including:
- Massage helps premature babies gain weight.
- Massage boosts immunity.
- Massage helps with conditions ranging from hypertension to PMS.
- Massage relieves pain from a variety of causes, including arthritis, surgery, and even burns.
Below are five useful facts about massage from the Touch Research Institute and other sources:
1. You don't have to massage the part of the body that hurts most.
Massage creates chemical changes that reduce pain and stress throughout the entire body.
2. Massage boosts immunity.
3. Massage reduces high blood pressure
4. No evidence suggests that one style of massage is more beneficial than another.
Whether it’s Shiatsu, Swedish, or Sports Massage, go for the one that suits you best.
5. You can massage yourself.
Even though you don't have to massage a specific painful area to get some relief, it does help more if you do.

Symptoms Men Should Not Ignore
Men, pay attention to any unusual symptoms, and consult your physician. Sometimes, women have to be the ones who encourage men to consult a doctor. Married men really do live longer.
Some symptoms may have a variety of causes, but some may indicate cancer. Your doctor will probably ask questions and do a physical exam, then may order diagnostic tests.
Hopefully, your doctor can rule out cancer, or detect it early when chances for a cure are better.
Symptoms in Men That May Indicate Cancer
- Breast Mass
Breast cancer is possible, but uncommon, in men.
- Persistent Pain
Most pain is not caused by cancer, but get checked. Your doctor may help you get some relief.
- Changes in the Testicles
Some doctors recommend monthly self-exams.
- Changes in the Lymph Nodes
A lump or swelling in lymph nodes in your neck, groin, under your armpit, or anywhere else that last more than 3-4 weeks.
- Unexplained Fever
Fever can indicate pneumonia, infection, cancer, or other serious illness.
- Weight Loss Without Trying
If you lose more than 10% of your total weight in a few weeks, talk to your physician.
- Abdominal Pain and Depression
May indicate pancreatic cancer.
- Unusual Fatigue
Frequent, extreme tiredness that doesn’t improve with rest.
- Persistent Cough lasting more than 3 weeks
Coughs are expected with flu, colds, and allergies, but if one hangs onfor more than 3-4 weeks, it could indicate something more serious.
- Difficulty Swallowing
Some men may even alter their diet to compensate for trouble swallowing, but this could point to cancer of the esophagus or some other serious problem.
