Human Connections Start with A Friendly Touch
Over the years, social scientists have shown in many studies that supportive touch can have good outcomes. A teacher’s touch on the arm of a student encourages participation in class. A simple touch can help patients feel more comfortable with their doctor. A parent's loving embrace soothes a crying child.
Touch is a very powerful rewarding stimulus. A friendly or supportive touch has universal and positive effects. Holding hands, hugging, and especially therapeutic massage calm us down, reduce our stress, and promote feelings of trust and connection.
What's happening in our brains and bodies that accounts for this magic?
It starts on the outside with the skin. The skin is our largest organ, about the size of a twin mattress. If somebody touches you, there's pressure pushing on your skin at the point of contact.
The pressure receptors just under the skin send a signal to the brain. These signals go directly to an important nerve bundle in your brain called the vagus nerve, which slows your heart down and decreases your blood pressure.
Friendly touch also results in a decrease of the stress hormone cortisol. In addition to calming us down and reducing our stress response, supportive touch also increases release of the oxytocin hormone. The surging of oxytocin makes you feel more trusting and connected. Being touched is also pleasant. We usually want more.
Simple, supportive touch slows your heart and lowers your blood pressure, making you feel less stressed and more soothed, and helps us feel close to one another.

Last Laugh
At my nephew’s wedding, the MC asked for words of wisdom for the newlyweds from the oldest married couples. My parents have been married for over 60 years, and my father offered,
“Until you get married, you don’t know what true happiness is – and then it’s too late!!”
