Hummingbirds

There is a hummingbird nest outside a window at my husband's workplace. The nest looks too small
even for the tiny bird, and all you can see in the nest are tiny bits of white fluff. When the bird
hovers, wings nearly invisible, you can see the long beak and a bit of green on the tail.

When I was visiting a friend in Central Oregon's high desert, the females could eat peacefully
together at the feeder, but the males were territorial. Tiny birds zooming about, dive-bombing each
other, chittering angrily - so startling, I Almost tumbled out of the hammock.

In my office hangs a painting of a hummingbird, which says "Hmmmm." It was gifted to me by a friend
when he closed his office to join the Peace Corps. The day he got it, he was considering several
paintings by the same artist - butterfly, flower, hummingbird.... Trying to decide which one to
buy, he kept looking and humming to himself, "Hmmmm." Then he laughed, realizing what he was doing,
and bought the hummingbird.

In the deck of medicine cards used by my women friends and me, the hummingbird
symbolizes Joy.

My late husband, who was a mountaineer, fondly told a story about eating his lunch on a beautiful
sunny day above the timberline. A hummingbird, apparently never having seen a human before, zipped
up and hovered right in front of his face, staring curiously, as if to say, "What are you!?"

Spring is here. The flowers in the garden are blooming yellow, purple, and pink, and the moss is healthy and bright green. We've had some taste of warmer, sunny weather, interspersed with our usual rain. Fortunately, we live in the land of early spring, and not elsewhere in the country where they may still have snow.

Spring is a time for new growth - opening to new possibilities, nurturing yourself, who you are and who you can become.

Embrace the changing season - let go of your winter muscle tension. Relieve your painful joints that have suffered in the cold weather. Invest your tax refund in your health and wellness.

Babies Cry in Their Native Accents

A new study suggests that crying newborn infants may be imitating the melody patterns of the language they heard while still in the womb.

Even infants only a few days old try to mimic the intonation patterns of their parents' language. French babies tended to cry with a rising melody, and German babies cried with a falling melody.

Sleeping Men Don't Hear Babies Cry

A baby crying is the sound most likely to wake up a woman, even if she's not a mother, but it's not even in the top ten for men.

Car alarms, howling wind and even a buzzing fly are more likely to disturb a man's sleep than a crying baby.

The differences were discovered in a study on the importance of a good night's sleep. Disturbed sleep can make you feel exhausted and depressed more than anything else.

Did you know that massage and bodywork can improve your sleep? By helping you to relax, reducing your anxiety, and lowering your blood pressure, massage can help you to achieve deep relaxation that stays with you for days. Massage helps you fall asleep and encourages deep sleep.

Sleeping Men Don't Hear Babies Cry

A baby crying is the sound most likely to wake up a woman, even if she's not a mother, but it's not even in the top ten for men.

Car alarms, howling wind and even a buzzing fly are more likely to disturb a man's sleep than a
crying baby. This is no surprise to moms, pet owners, or any woman who has ever slept with a man.

One theory is that these are evolutionary differences that make women more sensitive to sounds representing possible danger to their offspring, while men are more alert to potential threats to themselves and the whole group.

The differences between genders were discovered using an EEG to measure subconscious brain activity in a study on the importance of a good night's sleep. Disturbed sleep can make you feel exhausted and depressed more than anything else, especially if it occurs very often.

The tests also found that women are more likely to find their sleep disturbed, and men are more likely to be able to go back to sleep after being awakened. In addition, one-thirdof both sexes had moved to another room to get away from a partner's snoring.
