Sleeping Men Don't Hear Babies Cry

A baby crying is the sound most likely to wake up a woman, even if she's not a mother, but it's not even in the top ten for men.

Car alarms, howling wind and even a buzzing fly are more likely to disturb a man's sleep than a
crying baby. This is no surprise to moms, pet owners, or any woman who has ever slept with a man.

One theory is that these are evolutionary differences that make women more sensitive to sounds representing possible danger to their offspring, while men are more alert to potential threats to themselves and the whole group.

The differences between genders were discovered using an EEG to measure subconscious brain activity in a study on the importance of a good night's sleep. Disturbed sleep can make you feel exhausted and depressed more than anything else, especially if it occurs very often.

The tests also found that women are more likely to find their sleep disturbed, and men are more likely to be able to go back to sleep after being awakened. In addition, one-thirdof both sexes had moved to another room to get away from a partner's snoring.

"For centuries, women who ranted and raved and put curses on people were burned at the stake as witches. Fortunately sleep-deprivation is understood better nowadays."
