Stroke - 4 Signs To Look For

Remember the First 3 Letters - S. T. R. + A Fourth Indicator, the Tongue

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours, he can totally reverse the
effects of a stroke. He said the trick is getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting
the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

Recognizing a Stroke

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness
spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to
recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S - Ask the individual to SMILE.

T - Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE coherently (i.e. It is sunny out today).

R - Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call 911 immediately and describe the symptoms
to the dispatcher.

Another Sign of a Stroke - Stick out Your Tongue

Ask the person to 'stick' out his or her tongue. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side
or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke.

"Judge your success by the degree that you're enjoying peace, health, and love."

"Principles have no real force except when one is well-fed."

The Key to Active Aging
Bodywork For Boomers

Extracted from an article By Liz Prato originally published in Massage & Bodywork magazine.

Sixty-five never looked so young! Baby Boomers expect and demand their bodies to keep up with their active lifestyles. Fortunately, bodywork can help in this endeavor.

Discover the many ways in which massage therapy keeps Boomers healthy, active, and youthful.

Baby boomers are a generation used to hiking, walking, running, biking, kayaking, surfing, and just about every other activity imaginable. It's clear that this is a generation that won't stop being active simply because our bodies are getting older.

The only problem is, our bodies are getting older. Even if someone feels 30 mentally, his or her body most definitely is not. The joints, ligaments, and muscles that make sports possible have all endured years of wear and tear. If you use something day in and day out for 60 years, it's going to wear down.

A report found that in 1998, there was a 33 percent increase from seven years earlier in sports injuries sustained by people born between 1946 and 1964. The increase was not attributed to more baby boomers engaging in more physical activity. The difference was that, suddenly, those same active adults were aging and therefore more susceptible to injury.

The Important Role Of Massage

While massage cannot repair a serious injury, it can go a long way toward warding off some of the more serious injuries. "I really believe massage is the best preventative medicine," says Dr. Gaynl Keefe, a doctor of traditional Oriental medicine who recommends massage to many of her clients.

Between 50-60 percent of Keefe's patients are 45 years and older, and almost all are trying to stay active. Part of it is because they want to look thin. Part is because they want to ward off many of the diseases that often accompany age, like cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Part of it is because retired people simply have more time to be active than when they were chained to a desk all day. They're taking exercise classes, traveling, and chasing their grandkids.

As people age, "the body's whole chemical factory slows down," Keefe explained. The symptoms include: joints and ligaments drying out and becoming less elastic, disc degeneration causing back pain (especially the lower back), recovery time from illness or injury increasing, and the immune system wearing down, making people more susceptible to infection. Enter the healing art of massage.

Moo North: Cows Sense Earth's Magnetism

A new study finds cows and deer tend to face either magnetic north or south when grazing or resting. This held true regardless of where the sun was, or how the wind blew. This has come as a surprise even to those who spend their days with bovines. The discovery was made by a team from a German University who used Google Earth to look at cows and deer all around the world.

Quotations

"The mountain lion's lesson for me has been one of patience. Even more correctly, it has been a lesson in the value of uncaptured dreams. For much as I have loved the heart-stopping surprise of my encounters with bear, with wolf, with coyote,
they cannot match the power and purity of my unrequited desire to see Annie's lion.
A dream unrealized, the lion has taught me, is the essential food of the soul."

"Love is a fruit in season at all times, and within reach of every hand."

The Autumn Leaves
(Les Feuilles Mortes)
French lyrics by Jacques Prvert, English lyrics by Johnny Mercer, Music by Joseph Kosma.

The falling leaves drift by the window
The autumn leaves of red and gold
I see your lips, the summer kisses
The sun-burned hands I used to hold.

Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I'll hear old winter’s song
But I miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

Tips to Improve Your Health

Easy Tips to Improve Your Health
from Health magazine:

* A 60-minute nap can improve alertness for up to 10 hours. In the past, naps have gotten a bad rap
as an activity for slackers. Recently, napping has gotten new respect after tons of evidence has
shown that it increases productivity, mental alertness, and overall health. Research on pilots found
that a "NASA" nap - which is a short nap while the plane is in the hands of a copilot - improved
performance by 34% and alertness by 54%. A Harvard study found that a 45-minute catnap improves
learning and memory.

* A mixture of strawberries and baking soda whitens your teeth. The secret in this formula is the
malic acid in the strawberries. It won't replace cosmetic bleaching from your dentist, but it's a
fast, cheap way to brighten your smile. Just crush one ripe strawberry into a pulp, and mix in half
a teaspoon of baking soda. Then use a soft toothbrush to spread the mixture onto your teeth, and
leave it on for five minutes. When time is up, brush thoroughly and rinse. You can do this as often
as once a week. Proper dental care - which includes regular teeth cleanings - improves your overall
health and even adds years to your life, since it helps prevent plaque from getting into the body.

* Facebook can be good for you! Studies show that keeping in touch with your family and friends
delays memory loss and helps you live longer. In fact, strong social networks are a big reason some
people survive into their 80s and 90s, and others don't. One study reported in the Journal of
Epidemiology followed nearly 7,000 people over nine years. The ones who lacked social ties were more
likely to die prematurely than the folks with lots of contacts. So, go ahead and sign up for a
Facebook account. It's not just for kids anymore! In fact, Baby Boomers are signing up in droves.

* Kidney stone prevention. If you're prone to kidney stones, avoid iced tea, chocolate, nuts,
spinach and drink plenty of water.

Barry White, Put Down That Trowel!

The Royal Horticultural Society has determined that women's voices are better than men's for helping
plants to grow faster.

Colin Crosbie, Garden Superintendent at RHS, said: "We just don't know why. It could be that they
have a greater range of pitch and tone that affects the sound waves that hit the plant. Sound waves
are an environmental effect just like rain or light."

In some cases, plants men talked to grew less than those no one talked to.

The experiment used recordings of excerpts from John Wyndham's "The Day of the Triffids,"
Shakespeare's "A Midsummer's Night Dream" and Darwin's "On the Origin of Species."
